You just toss it in the washer, wait for it to dissolve a little bit and add your clothes. It's so easy even my laundry challenged Husband and Daughter are able to use it, I love it! I can't wait to tell you about the Purex Triple Action Laundry Detergent that I received to write a review about. However, all opinions expressed here are my own. My daughter has been away at school and decided it would be a good idea to bring her laundry home for her Mom to "fix". Oh boy, let me tell you she managed to do quite a number on them. She has also "forgotten" how to sort colors.  Well, the whites looked terribly dingy. I tried the new Purex Triple Action on them and was quite pleasantly surprised to see that the whites have brightened up, and most of the stains have been removed.
